Creating food sovereignty: Understanding the local

One of the most important steps which can be taken to improve future food security and food sovereignty in Latin America and Ireland is for local communities to become involved in the food production process. In both Ireland and Latin America the collective memory of producing food has not yet faded and few people are more than two generations removed from working the land. LASC will investigate what is being done in Ireland and in Latin America (through its partners) in terms of empowering local communities to have ownership of their own food production. This will include initiatives such as:

  • setting up allotments, kitchen gardens and community gardens
  • setting up land cooperatives
  • building local seed banks and preservation of genetic stock of heritage varieties
  • awareness and education campaigns aimed at encouraging the use of locally produced, unprocessed food
  • farmers markets, organic markets and food cooperatives

LASC will then work with those involved in these initiatives to bring the global perspective into their work, and work with individuals in the adult education sector to inform them of the practical dimension to the food sovereignty issue. Through several exchanges with Latin America, LASC will bring together those working towards food sovereignty in both regions, in order to share perspectives and ideas.
