New clash between villagers and police at Conga

Yesterday a delegation of approximately 1,500 villagers travelled to the Perol Lagoon to carry out an inspection, following a series of pronouncements by the government and the mining company that the Conga project is advancing. The villagers were prevented from carrying out the inspection by the national police, who fired tear gas and rubber bullets into the crowd.  One man, José Guillermo Cueva, aged 30, was injured in the arm and stomach.

"OUT OF AN ETHIC FOR PEACE

WILL COME A PEACE WITH ETHICS"

 

On May 18 and 19 2013 approximately 300 leaders of various Christian churches gathered at the Pontifical Javierian University in the city of Bogotá in an Ecumenical Forum for Peace,  to deliberate and reflect on the importance of applying an ethical framework in the context of the current dialogues between the government and the FARC.  The Ecumenical Peace Table movement was publically launched during the Forum.

Darbey Mosquera, son of Alfamir Castillo, was murdered on 28 February 2008 by the Colombian Army and then presented as a guerrilla killed in combat -these cases are known as "falsos positivos" and represent a crime against humanity.Since then Alfamir Castillo together with her husband have been fighting for justice; she is also an organsier of the women in Pradera, Valle del Cauca, a sugar cane cutters town.

President Santos should not turn Colombia into an invading country

The Nobel Peace Prize, Adolfo Pérez Esquivel, rejected the plan of Colombian president Juan Manuel Santos to turn Colombia into a member of NATO: "The Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) are peace initiatives for unity in the face of world powers. NATO represents exactly the opposite. It is an organization which promotes nuclear weapons, military interventions and the violations of human rights and the rights of the people".
