The Venezuela Ireland Support Group is a small group of people from various backgrounds who got together in 2006 concerned by attempts to undermine the democratically elected Government of Venezuela.
The basic aim of the group is to support the Venezuelan peoples right to self-determination without interference from outside forces and to support them in the important social and democratic reforms that they have started. Venezuela, under President Chavez, has seen illiteracy al most disappear, massive amounts of oil revenue have been diverted towards much-needed social programmes, poverty levels have been lowered substantially and huge improvements have been made in public health.
There are powerful forces lined up against the Venezuelan people and their government, mostly organised by the US government. There has already been a coup and an assassination attempt made against President Chavez. You may also have heard or read some of the more outrageous accusations made against the President, labelling him a supporter of international terrorism and accusing him of drug trafficking. Regrettably the European media, in the main, has rehashed the propaganda that emanates from the U.S State Department. The Irish media unfortunately appear to have joined in this 'race to the botto' and it has become impossible to find any positive news concerning the progressive programmes being adopted and implemented by the Venezuelan Government.
The main work of our group, to date, has been to try to counter the well- funded campaign of misinformation about the administration in Venezuela. We have organised letter-writing campaigns to the press and circulated information on the internet to politicians and the public. We have also organised public meetings with Venezuelan speakers. We are members and have attended meetings of The European Venezuelan Co-Ordination Group.
So far we have done all this in an informal way, but in conjunction with SIPTU we plan to re-launch the group in a more structured form. With this in mind we have decided to invite politicians, trade unionists, artists, activists, journalists to a meeting in The NEC Room, 11th Floor, Liberty, Hall, Dublin on 1st May at 8pm.
We would be delighted if you could come along on the night or alternatively if you would allow your name to be used as a sponsor of our group.
